What is the Terlingua Star Park?

Terlingua Star Park

If you have ever looked up at the night sky from West Texas, you know that the Big Bend region offers some of the darkest, most pristine stargazing conditions in North America. Scheduled to open in October 2026, those legendary skies are getting a major new dedicated venue: the Terlingua Star Park.

What to Expect

Remote Telescope Hosting

The Terlingua Star Park is gearing up to be a major hub for both amateur and professional astronomers. One of the most exciting features for astrophotographers will be their state-of-the-art remote telescope hosting. Big Bend Remote Observatories is constructing specialized warehouse-style buildings equipped with retractable roofs. This allows people to mail their telescopes to be hosted out under Bortle 1 dark skies and operate their rigs from anywhere in the world, letting astronomers truly make the most of their equipment.

For visitors making the trek to Big Bend in person, the Terlingua Star Park is also building a massive 240-seat concrete amphitheater. This venue will host large-scale, educational star parties, similar in style to the popular public programs at the McDonald Observatory. It is a fantastic development that will introduce hundreds of people at a time to the wonders of the cosmos. At around a $25 ticket price, it sounds like a great, low-commitment option for a fun evening under the stars.

The Bigger Picture

There's an old instinct in small tourism markets to treat every competitor as a threat. I don't see it that way. The Big Bend area has the darkest skies in the continental United States, and there will never be enough ways for visitors to experience them. The Terlingua Star Park sounds like a serious, well-built answer to that, and I'm glad it's being built by people who live here.

Every person who drives out for a star party is a person who gets to find out what a Bortle 1 sky actually looks like. And for a fair number of them, that first look won't be enough. It'll whet the appetite, and they'll want to go deeper next time.

Stargazing Tour at Starlingua

Private Stargazing Tour at Starlingua Ranch

A Private Stargazing Tour

That "next time" is what I built Starlingua for.

I host one group a night on a private 60-acre ranch near the northern boundary of Big Bend National Park. A couple on a date night, a family of four, group of six friends — whoever comes, the night is yours. No strangers, no line at the eyepiece, no moving on before you're ready.

You'll see double stars, clusters like crushed diamonds on black velvet, glowing nebulae, the remnants of dying stars, and the rings of Saturn. You'll learn your way around the constellations with a laser-guided tour and hear the stories behind them. Zero-gravity recliners, oh so comfortable (just don't fall asleep on me). And you'll take home a professional Astro Portrait of your group under the stars.

The night gets built around you and your party.
