Things to do in Terlingua at night: A Local's Guide

Experiencing Big Bend After Dark

Most people come to Big Bend for the hiking. They spend all day sweating on the Lost Mine Trail, grab a quick dinner, and by 8:30 PM, they are sitting in their rental cabin wondering, "Okay... now what?"

Terlingua isn't exactly a bustling metropolis. But honestly, that’s exactly why you’re here. Out in the Chihuahuan Desert, the day doesn't end when the sun goes down—that's when the real show starts.

If you're wondering what to do after dark in Terlingua, here is how you do it right.

1. Hang out on "The Porch"

Terlingua, TX - "The Porch"

You can't come to Terlingua without spending an evening on the front porch of the Starlight Theatre and Terlingua Trading Company. It’s the undisputed living room of the ghost town. Grab a drink, find a spot on a bench, and listen to whoever happens to be playing a guitar that night. It’s the perfect place to watch the sun drop behind the Chisos Mountains and watch the shadows stretch across the desert.

2. Walk the Ghost Town Ruins and Cemetery

Historic Terlingua Ghost Town Cemetery

During the day, the old quicksilver mining ruins are just hot rocks. At night, especially under a bright moon, the Terlingua Ghost Town Cemetery is incredible. Walking past the old miner shacks and the historic cemetery in the quiet of the desert is a completely different experience. Always be respectful of the historic gravesites.

3. Have a Drink Underground at La Kiva

La Kiva Bar in Terlingua

If you want to escape the lingering evening heat and experience one of the most unique bars in Texas, head over to La Kiva. You literally walk down into a subterranean cave bar built into the sandstone. It’s quirky, it’s dark, and it’s a classic piece of what makes Terlingua unique.

4. Stargaze from your Airbnb

A couple looking up at the stars at night.

Here is the honest truth: you don't need fancy equipment to have an amazing evening under the Big Bend night sky.

Grab a blanket, drag a chair out or just lay flat on the ground. Give your eyes about 20 to 30 minutes to fully adjust to the dark, and you'll see more stars than you can count. If you packed a standard pair of binoculars for hiking, grab them. Pointing regular binoculars at the night sky out here will reveal hundreds of more stars.

5. Starlingua Ranch Stargazing Experience

Starlingua Ranch Stargazing Experience

Naked-eye stargazing from your Airbnb is an incredible start, but if you want to see the best of what the night sky has to offer you need a guide with professional gear. That is exactly why I built Starlingua Ranch.

I host a private guided stargazing experience on 60 acres of untouched, off-grid desert. The evening consists of 4 parts:

  • Relax in zero-gravity recliners while your eye adapt to the dark.

  • Laser guided tour of the night sky, constellations and their stories.

  • Looking through the telescope at tonight’s curated list of top targets.

  • "Live-stack astrophotography" to pull in the intricate details of faint objects.

Each evening is limited to a total of 4 guests.
